As the demand for alternative sources of energy by world economies increases, industries are responding by creative development of power from wind, water, and other sources. Wind speed and water flow must be converted to electrical energy compatible with grid voltage and phase requirements. In most systems, the primary drive (reciprocating device or turbine) turns a generator/alternator shaft. Some sort of speed increaser is frequently required.

The epicyclical designs are inherently balanced (an advantage where higher output speeds are involved), and are subsequently lighter and more compact than spur gear or helical gear units. Planet teeth-to-roller contact is a rolling action, not sliding like cut gears, thus reducing frictional losses and minimizing lubrication problems.
